OXALIS -Shamrocks “Sunset Velvet”

Oxalis ‘Sunset Velvet’, a cultivated oxalis variety, is a compact plant known for its deep burgundy to velvety purple, triangular leaves and delicate, contrasting blooms. What makes this plant special is its rich, moody foliage paired with its movement—the leaves open and close with light changes, creating a dynamic, living display throughout the day.

Light drives both color intensity and how full the plant stays. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it gets bright, consistent light with some gentle direct sun. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 8–12 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the color fades and the plant stretches, losing its compact shape. Strong light keeps the foliage darker and more vibrant.

Watering should be moderate and consistent. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a well-draining mix with added perlite. This plant grows from bulbs—if foliage collapses suddenly, it may be entering dormancy, which is normal. If stems become soft while the soil is wet, the bulbs are staying too saturated. If the plant becomes thin or leggy, it’s reacting to light rather than watering.
