Begonia maculata, commonly called polka dot begonia, is a tropical plant native to Brazil known for its elongated, angel-wing shaped leaves covered in bright silver spots against a deep green surface with red undersides. What makes this plant special is that bold contrast—clean, evenly spaced “polka dots” paired with a dramatic leaf shape that gives it a high-end, statement look. It grows upright on cane-like stems and can become tall and structured over time.

Light supports both leaf pattern and overall structure. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it gets bright, consistent light without direct sun sitting on the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves and fade the spots, while too little light will cause the plant to stretch and lose its compact form.

Watering should stay balanced and controlled. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain, avoiding soaking the leaves. Use a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep it airy while holding some moisture. If the plant begins to lean or develop long, bare stems, it is reaching for more light. If leaves yellow and drop from the base with soft stems, it points to excess moisture at the roots. Crispy edges while the leaf stays firm often indicate low humidity rather than underwatering.
