The Zebra Plant (Aphelandra squarrosa) is a striking tropical houseplant known for its bold, dark green leaves marked with vivid white veins that resemble zebra stripes. Native to Brazil, it’s valued as a decorative foliage plant and often admired for its bright yellow flower bracts that appear under the right conditions. While it makes a dramatic statement indoors, it’s also known to be a bit finicky, requiring careful attention to its environment to thrive.

Light is one of the most important factors for a healthy Zebra Plant. It does best in bright, indirect light, where it gets enough illumination to keep its variegation strong but avoids direct sun that can scorch its leaves. If placed in too little light, growth slows, and the plant may lose its vibrant contrast. A spot near an east-facing window, or slightly back from a south or west window with filtered light, is often ideal.

Because Zebra Plants come from humid, tropical forests, they need consistently moist soil and higher humidity levels than many other houseplants. The soil should be kept evenly damp but never soggy, as too much water can lead to root rot. Misting, pebble trays, or a room humidifier will help prevent the leaf edges from browning. With the right balance of light, water, and humidity, the Zebra Plant rewards you with lush, patterned leaves and, on occasion, a showy flower bract that adds a pop of golden color.
