Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Rex Begonia ‘Red Heart’ (Begonia rex-cultorum) is a bold, hybrid cultivar known for its striking contrast—vivid red centers that resemble a glowing “heart,” framed by deep, almost black margins. The leaves are broad and slightly textured with softly jagged edges, giving it that dramatic, painted look rex begonias are famous for. This isn’t a naturally occurring plant in this form, but a carefully bred hybrid designed for intense color and visual impact, making it a standout in any collection or retail display.

Light plays a major role in maintaining that rich red coloring. This plant thrives in bright, indirect light, ideally around 100–300 foot-candles indoors or under grow lights in the 5000K–6500K range. Too little light will cause the red to fade and the plant to lose contrast, while direct sun can scorch the delicate leaves quickly—especially along those dark edges. Keep it a short distance back from a window or directly under a balanced grow light to maintain vibrant color and compact growth.

Watering and environment need to stay consistent for this one to thrive. Rex begonias prefer lightly moist soil, never soggy and never fully dried out—think evenly damp with good airflow around the roots. A chunky mix like soil, perlite, and orchid bark works well to prevent compaction. They also appreciate moderate to high humidity (50–70%), but still need airflow to avoid mildew or leaf issues. Crispy edges or curling usually point to low humidity or inconsistent watering rather than pests, so keeping conditions stable is key to keeping this plant full and healthy.
