Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Calathea rufibarba, commonly called Furry Feather Calathea, is a tropical foliage plant grown for its long, narrow, wavy leaves and soft, velvety texture. Native to Brazil, it thrives on the forest floor in filtered light and high humidity. What makes this plant special is the combination of elongated, feather-like leaves with a matte green top and deep burgundy undersides, along with the fine fuzz that covers the stems and leaf undersides. It grows upright in a clumping form, creating movement and height without becoming bulky.

Light requirements
Place Calathea rufibarba in an east window or 2 to 4 feet back from a south or west window where it receives bright, indirect light with no direct sun hitting the leaves. North windows can work if placed close to the glass, but growth will slow. Under grow lights, use 5000K to 6500K and keep the light 10 to 14 inches above the canopy. It performs best around 150 to 400 foot-candles. Too much direct light will cause fading and leaf edge burn, while too little light will result in slower growth and weaker structure.

Watering & environment
Keep the soil consistently lightly moist, never fully dry and never saturated. Always check the root zone with a chopstick or meter before watering. This plant is sensitive to dry air and prefers moderate to high humidity with steady airflow.

What your plant is telling you
If leaf edges start to crisp or curl, it is usually low humidity or inconsistent watering. If leaves yellow or stems soften, the soil is staying too wet. If the plant looks dull, slow, or stretched, it needs more consistent light.
