Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Ensete ‘Maurelii’, commonly called Red Abyssinian Banana, is a dramatic tropical plant grown for its large paddle-shaped leaves flushed with deep burgundy to red tones. Native to East Africa, this is not a true fruiting banana for indoor growers but an ornamental species prized for its bold color and fast, upright growth. What makes Ensete ‘Maurelii’ stand out is the rich red midrib, the way the color intensifies with light, and its ability to create a strong focal point with a single plant.

Place Ensete ‘Maurelii’ in a south or west window where it can receive the strongest natural light possible, ideally right at the window or within 1 to 2 feet. This plant demands high light to maintain its color and structure. Under grow lights, use 5000K to 6500K and position them about 8 to 12 inches above the top of the plant due to its high light needs. It performs best at 500 to 1,000+ foot-candles. In lower light, it will lose color intensity, grow slower, and produce weaker, more green leaves.

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, as Ensete ‘Maurelii’ is a heavy water user when actively growing. Always check the root zone before watering and do not let it dry out completely for extended periods. If leaves begin to droop or edges crisp, it is often a sign it has dried too far. If the base becomes soft or growth stalls, the soil may be staying too wet. This plant thrives in warm conditions, higher humidity, and strong airflow, and it will respond quickly to proper light and watering with rapid, impressive growth.
