Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Pilea depressa, native to Central and South America, is a fast-growing, creeping plant known for its tiny, round to slightly oval leaves that form a dense, mat-like layer as it spreads. What makes this plant special is its ability to create a soft, trailing carpet of foliage—tight, delicate leaves that cascade over edges while staying low and full.

Light drives how dense and compact the growth stays. Place it in an east or north-facing window where it gets steady, gentle light without direct sun hitting the foliage. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, it will thin quickly, with longer stems and more space between leaves. Strong, even light keeps the plant tight, lush, and layered.

Watering needs to stay consistent because this plant dries quickly due to its fine structure. Allow the top portion of the soil to dry slightly, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep airflow while holding moisture. If it dries out too far, it will crisp and thin rapidly. If stems become soft or collapse at the base while the soil is wet, the roots are staying too saturated. Patchy thinning is usually a light issue, while overall decline often ties back to moisture inconsistency.
