The heart leaf fern (Hemionitis arifolia), also known as the heart-shaped fern or "love fern," is a small, elegant plant native to tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, as well as parts of Asia. It thrives in moist, shady environments and is often found growing in the forest understory, where it enjoys high humidity and filtered light. Its heart-shaped fronds add a unique touch to indoor spaces, making it a popular choice for houseplant enthusiasts.

In terms of care, the heart leaf fern prefers consistently moist, well-draining soil but does not like to sit in water. It’s best to keep the soil lightly damp, but not soggy, to prevent root rot. Regular misting or placing the plant on a humidity tray can help maintain the moisture levels it craves. Fertilizing once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer is sufficient to encourage healthy growth. The plant should also be repotted every couple of years to refresh its soil and ensure it has enough space for root development.

For lighting, the heart leaf fern thrives in indirect, bright light. Direct sunlight can scorch its delicate fronds, so it's best to place it in a location where it will receive filtered or diffused light, such as near a north or east-facing window. If the plant is exposed to too much direct sun, its leaves may become yellow or develop brown edges. It’s important to avoid placing it in low-light conditions for extended periods, as this can cause the fern to become leggy and slow its growth.
