Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Alocasia reginula ‘Black Velvet’, native to Borneo in Southeast Asia, is a compact alocasia known for its thick, velvety, almost black leaves contrasted with bright silver veining. The foliage is small, structured, and slightly cupped, giving it a bold, high-contrast look in a compact form. It stays low and tight, making it a standout plant without taking up much space.

Light supports leaf health and that deep coloration. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it gets bright, consistent light without direct sun sitting on the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. Too much direct sun can damage the velvety surface and cause fading, while too little light will result in slower growth and smaller leaves.

Watering and environment need to stay controlled and consistent. Allow the soil to lightly dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain. Use a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep the roots airy while holding some moisture. If leaves begin to droop while the soil is still wet, it points to excess moisture at the roots. If new leaves are coming in smaller with less defined veining, it is not getting enough light. Crisping edges while the leaf stays firm often indicate low humidity or inconsistent moisture rather than underwatering.
