Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Ficus microcarpa ‘Golden Gem’ is a bright, structured plant known for its small, oval leaves edged in yellow to lime variegation. The foliage is dense and bushy, giving it a clean, manicured look that works well as a tabletop plant or small indoor tree. The contrast between the green centers and golden margins gives it a lighter, more vibrant feel compared to darker ficus varieties.

Light keeps the variegation crisp and the plant full. Place it in an east-facing window or a few feet back from a south or west-facing window where it gets steady, bright light without harsh direct sun sitting on the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K at 600–1000 foot-candles. Too little light will cause the yellow edges to fade and new growth to come in more green, while stronger light helps maintain the contrast and compact growth.

Watering should stay consistent but not heavy. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain. Use a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep it well-draining. If new leaves are coming in mostly green with reduced yellow edging, that points to not enough light. If the plant starts dropping inner leaves while the outer canopy stays full, it’s reacting to changes in light or watering. Leaf drop after moving locations is common with ficus and usually tied to environmental change rather than a single care issue.
