Ficus Elastica- Rubber Tree burgundy 6”

Ficus elastica ‘Burgundy’, commonly called the Burgundy Rubber Tree, is an upright-growing Ficus known for its thick, glossy leaves that mature to very deep green, burgundy, and nearly black tones. New leaves emerge wrapped in reddish sheaths and often show stronger burgundy coloring before darkening as they mature. Given enough time and space, this is not a small tabletop plant—it develops a woody trunk and can become a substantial indoor tree.

Light is important for maintaining dense growth, strong stems, and its deep coloration. Place it in an east or south-facing window, with south being especially useful during Michigan’s lower-light months. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned about 8–12 inches above the canopy. Too little light commonly produces longer spaces between leaves, slower growth, smaller new foliage, and a plant that gradually becomes sparse.

Allow the root zone to dry substantially between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow the excess to drain. Do not keep a Rubber Tree consistently wet. Check moisture deeper in the pot with a chopstick or water meter instead of judging by the top of the soil. Use a well-draining soil with plenty of aeration, keep it warm, and provide airflow around the foliage and soil. Avoid repeatedly moving it around the house once you find a location where it is growing well.

Watch its leaves and new growth for its clearest signals. Firm, glossy foliage and steadily increasing leaf size indicate good growing conditions. Drooping or slightly curling leaves paired with a dry root zone usually mean it is ready for water. Yellowing lower leaves with wet soil point toward too much moisture, while excessive leaf drop often means something in its environment has changed—especially light, temperature, watering, or location.
