Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Maranta leuconeura ‘Black’, commonly called black prayer plant, is a tropical plant native to Central and South America known for its dark, velvety leaves with bright contrasting veins that range from light green to red. What makes this plant special is its dramatic, high-contrast pattern paired with its movement—the leaves lift and fold upward at night, giving it that signature “prayer” behavior while maintaining a low, spreading form.

Light should be bright but gentle to protect the leaf surface and color. Place it in an east or north-facing window where it gets steady light without direct sun hitting the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 12–18 inches from the top of the plant. Too much direct sun can fade or burn the dark tones, while too little light will reduce contrast and slow growth.

Watering and environment need to stay consistent with higher humidity. Keep the soil lightly moist, never soggy and never fully dried out, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep it airy while holding moisture. If the leaves begin to curl or crisp at the edges, it often points to low humidity or inconsistent moisture. If the plant droops while the soil is still wet, it indicates excess moisture at the roots. If the leaf pattern starts to dull, it is not getting enough light.
