Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Codiaeum variegatum ‘Paintbrush’, commonly called Paintbrush Croton, is a tropical shrub grown for its narrow, colorful foliage. Native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, crotons grow in warm, bright environments with high humidity and strong light exposure. What makes this plant special is the thin, elongated leaves splashed with yellow, orange, red, and green, resembling strokes from a paintbrush. The foliage is narrow and slightly twisted at times, giving the plant a textured, energetic appearance.

Light requirements
Place Paintbrush Croton in a south or west window for the best color and growth, positioned at the window or within 1 to 2 feet depending on intensity. An east window can work with enough brightness, while a north window will reduce coloration and cause leggier growth. Under grow lights, use 5000K to 6500K and keep the light 8 to 12 inches above the canopy. It performs best around 500 to 1,000 foot-candles. Strong light is required to maintain vibrant color.

Watering & environment
Allow the soil to dry about halfway down before watering, and always check the root zone with a chopstick or meter before watering. Crotons prefer a well-draining mix, moderate to higher humidity, warm temperatures, and stable conditions. Sudden changes in temperature, drafts, or lighting can trigger leaf drop.

What your plant is telling you
If leaves droop slightly or feel thinner, it is ready for water. If leaves yellow and fall rapidly, the soil is staying too wet or the environment changed too quickly. If colors fade and growth stretches, it needs more consistent light.
