Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

The Coleus, Coleus scutellarioides, is a fast-growing tropical foliage plant native to Southeast Asia, grown for its bold, multicolored leaves rather than flowers. Leaves can be serrated, smooth, or ruffled, with combinations of red, pink, lime, purple, and deep green depending on the variety. The value is in the color and contrast, and how quickly it fills in. It stays soft-stemmed and can be shaped easily through trimming, making it ideal for full, bushy growth.

Light requirements start with direction. Place it in an east or west-facing window for bright, consistent light. Some varieties can handle a bit of direct morning or late sun, but harsh midday sun can wash out or burn the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned 10–14 inches from the canopy. This is a medium to high-light plant depending on the variety, and stronger light enhances color while low light leads to fading and stretching.

Watering and environment should stay consistent. Let the soil dry about halfway down, then water thoroughly and allow it to drain. Always check the root zone with a chopstick or meter before watering. Do not let it fully dry out, as it will wilt quickly, but avoid keeping it constantly wet. Leaves drooping soft mean it needs water, leggy growth signals not enough light, and dull or faded color points to low light. Keep temperatures warm, pinch regularly to keep it compact, and remove flower spikes to maintain foliage growth.
