Begonia ‘Painted Leaf’ (Rex begonias) traces its origins to the tropical and subtropical forests of Asia, particularly India and surrounding regions. In the wild, these begonias grow along shaded forest floors where they receive soft, filtered light through overhead foliage. This gentle lighting allows their intricate leaf patterns and vivid colors to develop without burning.

Indoors, Begonia ‘Painted Leaf’ thrives in bright, indirect light, ideally near an east-facing window that provides mild morning sun or a north-facing window with steady diffuse daylight. Because its patterned leaves are delicate and prone to scorching, direct midday or afternoon sunlight should be avoided. Too little light, on the other hand, can lead to faded color and leggy growth, diminishing the plant’s decorative appeal.

To help maintain symmetrical growth and vibrant foliage, rotate the plant weekly so each side receives equal light.
