Alocasia ‘Black Onyx’ traces its origins to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, where many Alocasia varieties grow beneath dense canopies. In these shaded environments, the plant receives filtered, indirect light, which helps its dramatic, nearly black foliage develop its glossy sheen. Understanding this natural lighting condition is essential for recreating the right environment indoors.

As a houseplant, Alocasia ‘Black Onyx’ thrives in bright, indirect light, ideally from an east-facing window that provides gentle morning sun. It can also do well near a north-facing window where light is consistent but not harsh. Avoid strong, direct afternoon sunlight from south- or west-facing windows, as it can fade or burn its dark leaves.

To maintain even growth and prevent the plant from leaning toward its light source, rotate it every week or two. If your space is dim, a full-spectrum grow light positioned slightly above and angled toward the plant can replicate its natural canopy light. With steady, diffused illumination, Alocasia ‘Black Onyx’ will keep its bold, elegant color and vigorous form.
