Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Peperomia prostrata, commonly called String of Turtles, is a trailing tropical plant grown for its small, round leaves patterned like turtle shells. Native to Brazil, it grows as a low, creeping plant in warm, humid forest environments. What makes this plant special is the intricate dark green veining over lighter green leaves, along with its delicate, cascading growth habit. The leaves are tiny, slightly succulent, and grow along thin, trailing stems, creating a dense, layered look.

Light requirements
Place String of Turtles in an east or north window for the best balance of growth and leaf detail, positioned at the window or within 1 to 2 feet depending on intensity. A west window can work if pulled back from direct sun, while a south window should be filtered to avoid burning the small leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K to 6500K and keep the light 10 to 14 inches above the canopy. It performs best around 100 to 300 foot-candles. Too much light will stress and fade the pattern, while too little will thin it out.

Watering & environment
Allow the soil to dry about halfway down before watering, and always check the root zone with a chopstick or meter. The small, slightly succulent leaves hold some moisture, so it is sensitive to overwatering. Use a well-draining mix and avoid letting it stay wet. It prefers moderate to higher humidity and steady airflow.

What your plant is telling you
If leaves become thin, soft, or start dropping, it is drying out too much. If stems become mushy or leaves yellow, the soil is staying too wet. If the pattern fades or growth becomes sparse and stretched, it needs more consistent light.
