Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Euphorbia trigona ‘Red’ (often sold as African milk tree red), native to Central Africa, is a tall, columnar succulent known for its triangular stems with ridged edges, small leaves, and reddish to burgundy tones along the growth. What makes this plant special is its strong vertical structure combined with that red coloration, which intensifies under the right light, giving it a bold, architectural look.

Light drives both color and how sturdy the growth stays. Place it in a south or west-facing window where it receives strong, direct light. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 6–10 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the red tones fade to green and the stems become thinner and weaker. Strong light keeps the plant dense, upright, and more deeply colored.

Watering should be minimal and controlled. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it dry again, using a fast-draining mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This plant shows stress through its structure—if the stems soften, discolor, or collapse at the base, the roots are staying too wet. If growth becomes stretched or pale, it’s a light issue. Slight leaf drop along the ridges can be normal as it adjusts, but mushy tissue is always a sign of excess moisture.
