Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

The Mickey Mouse plant, most commonly sold as Xanthosoma atrovirens 'Variegata' (often mislabeled as an Alocasia), is a tropical aroid native to Central and South America, grown for its bold, irregular white and green variegation. The leaves are large and arrow-shaped, with patterns that sometimes resemble the “ears” look that gave it the nickname. This is a fast grower in the right conditions, and the value is in the high-contrast variegation and large, statement foliage.

Light requirements start with direction. Place it in an east or west-facing window for bright, consistent light. A south window works if set back 2–4 feet to avoid burning the white sections. Variegation needs strong light to maintain pattern. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned 8–12 inches from the canopy. Treat this as a medium to high-light plant to keep variegation stable.

Watering and environment should stay controlled but consistent. Let the soil dry about halfway down, then fully saturate and allow it to drain. Always check the root zone with a chopstick or meter before watering. Do not let it sit wet, but also do not let it fully dry out for long periods. Use a chunky, well-draining mix. Drooping with firmness means it’s ready for water, yellowing points to overwatering, and browning on white sections can mean either inconsistent watering or light that’s too intense. Keep humidity moderate to higher, temperatures warm, and airflow steady.
