Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Calathea ornata, commonly called pinstripe calathea, is a tropical plant native to South America known for its dark green, elongated leaves marked with thin pink to white pinstripes and deep purple undersides. What makes this plant special is its fine, delicate striping—clean, evenly spaced lines that contrast sharply against the dark leaf surface, giving it a refined, high-detail look.

Light should be gentle and consistent to maintain its pattern and prevent stress. Place it in a north or east-facing window where it gets soft light without direct sun hitting the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 12–18 inches from the top of the plant. In stronger light, the stripes can fade and leaves may curl. In lower light, growth slows and the plant can lose its tight form. Even, moderate light keeps it balanced and vibrant.

Watering and environment need to stay consistent. Keep the soil lightly moist, never soggy and never fully dried out, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to maintain airflow while holding moisture. This plant reacts quickly—if edges crisp or leaves curl inward, it’s often a humidity or watering inconsistency issue. If leaves yellow from the base while the soil is wet, the roots are staying too saturated. Distorted or smaller new leaves usually point to environmental stress rather than needing more water.
