Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

The String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii) is a trailing succulent-like plant native to southern Africa, where it grows in rocky, arid environments. Known for its delicate, heart-shaped leaves and thin, trailing vines, it belongs to the Apocynaceae family. The plant’s foliage displays a beautiful variegation of green, silver, and sometimes purple tones, and it can produce small, tubular, purplish-pink flowers resembling tiny lanterns. Its dainty yet hardy nature has made it a beloved choice for hanging planters and shelves in homes and offices.

In terms of light, the String of Hearts flourishes in bright, indirect sunlight. It does best near a south- or west-facing window where it can enjoy plenty of ambient light without direct, harsh sun. Direct light can cause leaf scorching, while low light may result in leggy growth and loss of color. If grown indoors, placing it in a sunlit room with sheer curtains or a few feet away from a sunny window is ideal. It can also adapt to artificial light, though growth may be slower compared to natural light conditions.

Caring for a String of Hearts involves mimicking its native dry climate. It prefers well-draining soil—such as a cactus or succulent mix—and should be watered only when the soil has dried out completely. Overwatering is the most common issue and can lead to root rot or tuber decay. Moderate humidity is sufficient, and it doesn’t require misting. Pruning the vines encourages fuller growth, and the plant can easily be propagated from stem cuttings or tubers. With minimal care, this charming plant will trail and twine beautifully, adding whimsical charm to any indoor space.
