Calathea lancifolia, commonly called rattlesnake plant, is a tropical plant native to Brazil known for its long, wavy leaves patterned with dark green oval markings over a lighter green surface and deep purple undersides. What makes this plant special is its bold, reptile-like pattern combined with that contrast of green on top and purple beneath, along with its daily movement as the leaves lift and lower.

Light needs to be controlled to maintain pattern and leaf health. Place it in a north or east-facing window where it gets gentle, consistent light without direct sun hitting the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 12–18 inches from the top of the plant. In stronger light, the leaves can fade or curl, while in lower light the pattern becomes less defined and growth slows.

Watering and environment need to stay consistent with higher humidity. Keep the soil lightly moist at all times, never soggy and never fully dried out, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep airflow while holding moisture. This plant shows stress clearly—if leaf edges crisp or curl inward, it’s reacting to dry air or inconsistent watering. If leaves yellow from the base while the soil is wet, the roots are staying too saturated. If new leaves come in smaller or distorted, it’s often a humidity or light consistency issue rather than needing more water.
