Epipremnum aureum, golden pothos, is a fast-growing climbing and trailing aroid native to Southeast Asia known for its glossy, heart-shaped leaves splashed with golden yellow variegation. What makes this plant special is its adaptability and vigorous growth—it is one of the easiest houseplants to grow and, when given support, can produce much larger leaves with impressive fenestrations as it matures.
Light drives both variegation and leaf size. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it gets bright, consistent light without direct sun sitting on the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 8–12 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the golden variegation fades and new growth becomes more green, with smaller leaves and longer spacing between nodes. Strong, even light keeps the color vibrant and encourages larger foliage, especially when grown on a moss pole or plank.
Watering should stay balanced and consistent. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This plant stores very little water in its leaves, so avoid letting it stay bone dry for extended periods. If vines become long with small leaves, it needs more light or vertical support rather than more water. Yellowing leaves while the soil is wet indicate the roots are staying too saturated, while soft stems point to excess moisture.
One of the biggest differences you’ll notice is how the plant grows. Left to trail, golden pothos will keep relatively small leaves. Given something to climb, it begins its mature growth phase, producing much larger leaves and, under excellent conditions, developing natural fenestrations similar to a Monstera.

The plant arrived in perfect condition and is beautiful. I love it!
Despite the “beginner” name, I’d say it’s genuinely useful at any experience level. It starts with a solid foundation for those just getting into houseplants, but the depth of the later guides means it doesn’t feel like it’s talking down to anyone with more experience. It’s less about basic care instructions and more about building a real understanding of how plants function, which is useful whether you’re keeping your first pothos alive or managing a larger, more varied collection.
What sets it apart is the emphasis on understanding why plants behave the way they do, not just prescribing one-size-fits-all care instructions. This approach makes it easier to recognize early warning signs and address issues before they become serious problems.
Overall, I’d recommend this to anyone who wants a more thorough, connected understanding of plant care rather than piecemeal advice — regardless of how long you’ve been growing.
Wonderful shop to purchase from! I am
Learning so much and am thoroughly enjoying the beginners plant guide series. The pest guide helped me successfully defeat fungus gnats and taught me to transition to bottom watering. Thanks Mel!!
