Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Curio rowleyanus, commonly called string of pearls, is a trailing succulent native to Southwest Africa known for its round, bead-like leaves that grow along thin cascading stems. What makes this plant special is its clean, sculptural look—long strands of uniform green “pearls” that spill over containers, creating a full, flowing effect.

Light drives how tight and full the strands stay. Place it in a south or west-facing window where it receives strong, direct light. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 6–10 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the pearls will space out along the vine and the strands will thin. Strong light keeps the plant dense with closely stacked beads.

Watering should be minimal and precise. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it dry again, using a fast-draining mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This plant shows thirst through a slight flattening or “window line” on the pearls while still feeling firm. If pearls become soft, translucent, or fall off easily, the roots are staying too wet. If strands stretch or thin, it’s reacting to light, not watering.
