Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Chlorophytum comosum, commonly called spider plant, is a tropical plant native to South Africa known for its arching, strap-like leaves that can be solid green or variegated with white or cream stripes. What makes this plant special is its ability to produce long runners with baby plantlets that hang down, creating a full, cascading look while also making it one of the easiest plants to propagate and share.

Light supports both variegation and plantlet production. Place it in an east or north-facing window where it gets steady, gentle light without direct sun hitting the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light will reduce variegation and slow the production of runners.

Watering should stay moderate and consistent. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain. Use a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep it airy while holding some moisture. If the plant stops producing babies, it is not getting enough light. Brown tips can indicate inconsistent watering or sensitivity to minerals in tap water. Yellowing leaves with soft bases point to excess moisture at the roots rather than underwatering.
