The Queen of the Night (Epiphyllum oxypetalum) is a stunning tropical cactus prized for its enormous, fragrant white blooms that open only at night and wilt by dawn. Native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, this epiphytic plant grows naturally in the crevices of trees, drawing moisture from the humid air and organic debris. Its long, flat, leaf-like stems give it a dramatic presence, but it’s the once-a-year nighttime blooming spectacle—often accompanied by a sweet, intoxicating scent—that makes it so famous among plant collectors.

Caring for a Queen of the Night means mimicking its native habitat. It thrives in bright, indirect light, ideally near an east- or south-facing window filtered by a sheer curtain. Too much direct sun can scorch the stems, while too little light may prevent blooming. Use a well-draining cactus or orchid mix to ensure the roots stay healthy, and water thoroughly only when the top few inches of soil are dry. It prefers moderate humidity and benefits from occasional misting, especially during dry months.

To encourage flowering, provide a short rest period in winter by reducing watering and keeping the plant in slightly cooler temperatures, around 55–60°F. Come spring, resume regular care and fertilize with a balanced, diluted feed every few weeks to promote healthy growth and blooms. Given proper care, this plant can live for decades and reward you with an unforgettable nighttime show—making it a true crown jewel of any plant collection.
