Zamioculcas zamiifolia is native to eastern Africa where it grows in drought prone environments with bright filtered light and long dry cycles. It stores water in thick rhizomes beneath the soil and in its fleshy stems which allows it to tolerate extended dry periods. All cultivars share the same core structure but leaf pigmentation affects light demand and growth speed. Firm upright stems and glossy leaflets indicate proper balance while yellowing from the base often reflects excess moisture.

Water using your soak and dry rhythm checking the root zone with a chopstick or moisture meter before watering. The soil must be very well draining using a blend heavy in bark and perlite with a lighter potting base to protect the rhizomes from rot. Water thoroughly then allow the root zone to dry down completely before watering again. Soft stems and yellowing leaves signal soil staying too wet while wrinkling at the base of stems indicates extended dryness beyond the plant’s stored reserves.

Regular ZZ prefers moderate light and performs best in an east window within one to three feet or a south window four to six feet back. Raven ZZ tolerates slightly lower light and can sit in a north window within one to two feet though growth will slow. Chameleon begins lime green and matures darker so it benefits from east within one to two feet or south three to five feet back to maintain compact growth. Albo contains reduced chlorophyll and requires the strongest placement with east within one foot or south three to four feet back to prevent fading and stretching. Under grow lights use five thousand to sixty five hundred Kelvin placed twelve to eighteen inches above the plant for ten to twelve hours daily with Albo positioned closest to the source.
