Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Tillandsia usneoides, commonly called Spanish moss, is an air plant native to the southeastern United States, Central, and South America known for its long, silvery-gray strands that drape and cascade from trees or hanging displays. What makes this plant special is that it has no true soil roots—it absorbs water and nutrients directly through its leaves, giving it that soft, flowing, almost hair-like appearance.

Light drives how full and soft the strands stay. Place it in a bright area near an east or south-facing window where it gets strong, indirect light without direct sun sitting on it for long periods. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 12–18 inches from the plant. In lower light, it becomes thinner and less dense. In too much direct sun, it can dry out quickly and turn brittle.

Watering is completely different from soil plants. Soak or thoroughly mist the plant 2–3 times per week depending on your environment, then allow it to fully dry with good airflow. It should dry within a few hours. If it stays wet too long, it can rot from the inside. If it becomes crispy and gray with no softness, it’s drying out too much. Healthy Spanish moss should feel soft and flexible, not brittle or mushy.
