Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Astrophytum asterias, commonly called sand dollar cactus, is a spineless cactus native to Texas and northern Mexico known for its flat, round body marked with white speckling across a green surface. What makes this plant special is its perfect, symmetrical shape that resembles a sand dollar, combined with its soft, dotted pattern and occasional bright yellow flowers that emerge from the center.

Light drives how compact and symmetrical the body stays. Place it in a south or west-facing window where it receives strong light, but avoid harsh, prolonged direct sun on indoor-grown plants. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 6–10 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the plant can lose its flat shape and begin to dome upward. Strong, even light keeps it low, wide, and evenly patterned.

Watering should be minimal and very controlled. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it dry again, using a fast-draining mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This plant is sensitive at the base—if it becomes soft or discolored, the roots are staying too wet. If the body starts to swell upward instead of staying flat, it’s reacting to light conditions. Slight softening while remaining firm indicates it’s ready for water, while any mushy areas signal excess moisture.
