Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Pachycereus marginatus, commonly called Mexican fence post cactus, is a columnar cactus native to Mexico known for its tall, straight growth with defined ribs lined by evenly spaced areoles and short spines. What makes this plant special is its clean, architectural form—smooth, upright columns that grow in a uniform, fence-like pattern, making it one of the most structured and symmetrical columnar cacti.

Light drives how thick and stable the columns develop. Place it in a south or west-facing window where it receives strong, direct light. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 6–10 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the columns will thin and stretch, losing that firm, straight structure. Strong light keeps the growth dense, upright, and evenly ribbed.

Watering should be minimal and controlled. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it dry again, using a fast-draining mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This cactus shows stress through its structure—if the base becomes soft or discolored, the roots are staying too wet. If new growth becomes thinner or lighter in color, it’s reacting to light, not water. Slight wrinkling while remaining firm indicates it’s ready for water, while any mushy tissue signals excess moisture.
