Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Pteris cretica ‘Mayii’, commonly called silver brake fern, is a compact fern known for its soft, arching fronds with a silvery center and green margins. New growth often emerges with a bronze or pink tone before maturing into that muted silver-green contrast. The finely divided leaflets give it a light, layered texture that feels soft and full without being bulky.

Light should be bright but gentle to maintain that silver coloring. Place it in an east-facing window or a few feet back from a south or west-facing window where it gets steady, filtered light without direct sun hitting the fronds. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K at 300–600 foot-candles. Too much direct sun can wash out or burn the delicate fronds, while too little light will cause the silver centers to fade and growth to become thinner and less full.

Watering and environment need to stay consistent. Keep the soil lightly moist, never soggy and never fully dried out, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep airflow while still holding some moisture. If fronds start to crisp at the tips while staying green, it’s reacting to dry air rather than lack of water. If new growth comes in smaller and less defined with less silver contrast, it’s not getting enough light. Sudden collapse of fronds usually points to the soil drying out too far between waterings rather than staying too wet.
