Lipstick Plant Bicolor basket

Aeschynanthus ‘Bicolor’, commonly called lipstick plant bicolor, is a trailing plant native to Southeast Asia known for its glossy green leaves and tubular flowers that show two-toned coloring, typically red with darker or contrasting tips. What makes this plant special is that bloom contrast—the flowers emerge from darker buds and open into vibrant, layered color, giving it that classic “lipstick” look against a trailing, full vine.

Light drives both flowering and how dense the vines stay. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it gets bright, consistent light without prolonged harsh sun sitting on the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 8–12 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the plant will grow but is unlikely to flower. Strong, even light keeps the foliage full and supports blooming.

Watering should be moderate and consistent. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep airflow high. This plant shows stress through its leaves—if they soften or wrinkle slightly, it’s ready for water. If leaves drop while still firm, it often points to inconsistent watering or environmental shifts. If stems become soft at the base, the roots are staying too wet, while lack of blooms usually points to light rather than watering.
