Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Aeschynanthus ‘Black Pagoda’, commonly called lipstick plant Black Pagoda, is a trailing plant native to Southeast Asia known for its elongated leaves with dark green tops patterned in lighter green and deep purple undersides. What makes this plant special is that bold contrast—the patterned top paired with the rich underside, along with its ability to produce tubular red-orange flowers that emerge like “lipstick” blooms from the tips.

Light drives both pattern clarity and flowering potential. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it gets bright, consistent light without direct sun sitting on the leaves for long periods. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 8–12 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the pattern dulls and flowering is unlikely. Strong, even light keeps the foliage vibrant and supports blooms.

Watering should be moderate but controlled. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep it airy. This plant shows stress through its leaves—if they wrinkle or feel thin, it’s ready for water. If leaves drop while still firm, it’s often from inconsistent watering or environmental shifts. Soft stems at the base indicate the roots are staying too wet, while lack of blooms typically points to light rather than watering.
