Crassula ovata 'Gollum', commonly called Jade Fingers or Ogre Ears, is a mutated jade plant cultivar grown for its unusual tubular foliage. Instead of flat succulent leaves, the plant develops elongated green tubes with flared tips that resemble tiny suction cups or ears. As the plant matures, the stems become thicker and more tree-like, giving it a sculptural appearance that works well as both a houseplant and bonsai-style specimen. Some plants stay fully green, while others develop red edging when exposed to stronger light.

This plant requires bright light to maintain compact growth and strong structure. A south or west-facing window is ideal indoors, while an east window can work if the plant sits directly in the light source. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K lighting positioned about 8–12 inches above the canopy. In lower light, the stems stretch, spacing between leaves increases, and the plant loses the dense sculptural shape that makes it attractive. Stronger light also helps intensify red coloration along the leaf edges.

Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Crassula ovata 'Gollum' stores water inside its leaves and is far more tolerant of drought than excess moisture. Use a fast-draining succulent mix with good airflow around the roots. Wrinkled or slightly soft leaves usually indicate the plant is thirsty, while mushy stems, yellowing foliage, or sudden leaf drop are signs the soil is remaining wet too long. During winter or slower growth periods, watering should be reduced significantly.
