Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Gymnocalycium mihanovichii ‘Variegated’, native to South America, is a small globular cactus known for its vivid variegation in shades of red, pink, yellow, orange, and green across a ribbed, rounded body. What makes this plant special is its intense, almost neon coloration—often appearing in multiple tones on a single plant—paired with its compact, symmetrical shape, giving it strong visual impact despite its size.

Light drives both color stability and form. Place it in a south or west-facing window where it receives strong light, but avoid prolonged harsh direct sun on highly variegated sections. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 6–10 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, the colors can dull and the plant may stretch slightly. Strong, balanced light keeps the body compact and the colors more vibrant without burning sensitive areas.

Watering should be minimal and precise. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it dry again, using a fast-draining mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This plant shows stress quickly—if the base becomes soft or discolored, the roots are staying too wet. If the body starts to elongate or lose its round shape, it’s reacting to light, not water. Slight softening without discoloration can indicate it’s ready for water, while mushy tissue always points to excess moisture.
