Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Selenicereus chrysocardium, commonly called fern leaf cactus, is an epiphytic cactus native to the rainforests of Mexico, known for its long, deeply lobed stems that resemble fern fronds. The bright green segments grow in a flowing, trailing pattern, giving it a soft, tropical look rather than a typical desert cactus form. As it matures, it can produce large, fragrant night-blooming flowers, adding another layer of interest.

Light should be bright but filtered to support full, healthy growth. Place it in an east or north-facing window where it receives steady light without direct sun hitting the stems. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. Too much direct sun can cause the segments to yellow or stress, while too little light will result in thinner, less defined growth.

Watering should be more frequent than desert cacti but still controlled. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain. Use a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep it airy while holding some moisture. If the segments begin to thin and lose their fullness, it needs more consistent moisture. If the base becomes soft or discolored, it is staying too wet. Long, stretched growth with wider spacing between lobes points to not enough light rather than watering.
