Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Pteris cretica, commonly called Green Brake Fern. Native to tropical and subtropical regions where it grows along shaded forest floors. This plant is known for its clean, structured fronds with evenly spaced leaflets along a central stem. New growth emerges upright in a bronze or copper tone, then matures to green, so you’ll often see both colors on the plant at the same time. It has a light, architectural look while still feeling soft and full.

North or east window is ideal. It can sit right at the window or 1–3 ft back. Avoid direct sun, especially from south or west exposure, which will scorch and fade the fronds. Grow lights: 5000K–6500K placed 12–18 inches above the canopy. Target 75–200 foot-candles. Too much light causes fading and crisping. Too little light leads to thin, stretched growth.

Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy. This plant does not want to fully dry out. Check the root zone and water as it approaches dry, not after it dries. Prefers moderate to higher humidity with steady airflow. What it’s telling you: crispy edges mean too dry or low humidity. Yellowing means too wet. Bronze new growth is normal. Sparse or weak growth means not enough light.
