Alocasia macrorrhizos ‘Stingray’, native to Southeast Asia, is a bold alocasia known for its uniquely shaped leaves that resemble a stingray with a long tail-like tip extending from the center. The foliage is smooth, glossy, and bright green, growing upright on tall stems that give it height and movement. Its unusual shape makes it a standout, especially as the leaves get larger and more defined with maturity.
Light supports both leaf size and that distinctive shape. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it gets bright, consistent light without direct sun sitting on the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. Too little light will result in smaller leaves with shorter or less defined “tails,” while stronger light helps maintain larger, more structured growth.
Watering and environment need to stay consistent. Keep the soil lightly moist, never soggy and never fully dried out, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep it airy. If new leaves are coming in smaller with shorter tails, it is not getting enough light. If leaves begin to droop while the soil is still wet, it points to excess moisture at the roots. Edges crisping while the rest of the leaf stays firm often indicate low humidity or inconsistent moisture rather than overwatering.
