Alocasia Calidora 10”

Alocasia ‘Calidora’, commonly called giant upright elephant ear, is a tropical hybrid known for its massive, upright leaves and bold architectural structure. What makes this plant special is its scale—large, shield-shaped foliage held high on thick stems, creating a dramatic tropical canopy that can quickly become a statement plant indoors or outdoors.

Light drives both leaf size and overall structure. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it gets bright, consistent light with some gentle direct sun. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 8–12 inches from the top of the plant with broad coverage. In lower light, the stems stretch and the leaves stay smaller and more drooped. Strong, even light keeps the foliage larger, thicker, and more upright.

Watering should stay consistent because this plant is a heavy grower. Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to maintain airflow around the roots. During active growth, it will use water quickly, especially in stronger light and warmer temperatures. If leaves droop while the soil is dry, it’s thirsty. If lower leaves yellow while the soil remains wet, the roots are staying too saturated.

This plant communicates clearly through leaf posture and size. Large upright leaves indicate stable light and moisture. Smaller new leaves usually point to lower light or restricted root space rather than needing fertilizer. If stems become soft at the base or leaves collapse suddenly while wet, it points to root stress. Some older leaf loss as new growth forms can be normal because this plant cycles energy quickly during active growth.
