Philodendron ‘Green Congo’, a self-heading hybrid from tropical South American lineage, is known for its broad, glossy, deep green leaves that grow upright from a central base. What makes this plant special is its strong, structured form—thick, layered foliage that stays full and compact without needing support, giving it a bold, architectural presence.

Light drives how large and dense the leaves become. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it gets bright, consistent light without direct sun sitting on the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–12 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, new leaves come in smaller and the plant opens up slightly. Strong, even light keeps the leaves broader, thicker, and more tightly stacked.

Watering should stay balanced with good airflow at the roots. Allow the soil to partially dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly and let it drain, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark. This plant grows from a central crown, so if water sits in that center, it can lead to crown rot—always water around the base. If multiple lower leaves yellow at once, the soil is staying too wet. If new leaves stall or emerge smaller, it’s reacting to light levels, not needing more water.
