Lifesaver cactus is the common name for Huernia zebrina, a succulent recognized for its unusual star shaped flowers that feature a raised circular ring in the center resembling a lifesaver candy. The blooms display yellow and burgundy zebra like striping across the surface which makes the plant highly recognizable when flowering. Thick angular stems grow in clusters at the base and resemble small cactus segments even though the plant is actually a succulent in the Apocynaceae family rather than a true cactus.

The species originates from dry regions of southern Africa where it grows in rocky soils and open landscapes that receive intense sunlight and seasonal rainfall. In nature the plant spreads slowly across the ground forming low clumps of segmented stems that store water during dry periods. During the warm growing season the plant produces its distinctive patterned flowers close to the base of the stems which attract pollinators in its native habitat.

Lifesaver cactus grows best near south facing windows positioned about one to two feet from the glass where the plant receives strong daily sun. West facing windows can also support healthy growth when the plant sits about one to three feet from the glass allowing several hours of afternoon light. A fast draining cactus soil containing sand pumice or perlite helps prevent excess moisture around the roots and watering should occur when a chopstick inserted into the soil comes out completely dry or when a moisture meter reads around one. Soft stems yellowing tissue or collapse at the base signal the plant is receiving too much water while thin stretched growth indicates the plant is not receiving enough light.
