Philodendron camposportoanum is a climbing aroid native to Brazil where it grows along tree trunks in humid tropical forests. This species is highly desirable because the leaves transform dramatically as the plant matures. Juvenile leaves begin small and heart shaped while mature foliage becomes elongated with a distinct three lobed shape and a glossy surface that can show bronze tones under strong light. Indoors the plant grows best in an east window within one to two feet of the glass where it receives steady morning sun. A south window within four to six feet can also support strong growth as long as the plant is not directly against intense midday light. When grown under artificial lighting place the plant directly under a grow light for ten to twelve hours daily to maintain strong leaf development.

This plant prefers an airy climbing aroid soil that allows water to move through the pot while still holding moderate moisture around the roots. A blend of potting soil orchid bark and perlite creates the loose structure the roots prefer and prevents compaction as the plant matures. Use a chopstick or water meter to determine when the root zone is ready for water. Allow the soil to dry slightly between watering while avoiding extended dry periods that slow growth.

The plant gives clear signals when conditions change. If the leaves remain small and heart shaped the plant needs stronger light or a surface to climb. Long spacing between leaves indicates insufficient light. Loss of bronze tones on new growth often means the plant has been moved too far from the window. Yellowing lower leaves combined with wet soil usually signal excess moisture around the roots.
