Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Understanding Alcohol, Systemics, and Resistance
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a decision-making approach to preventing and managing pests before they become serious infestations. Rather than relying on a single product, IPM combines healthy plant care, routine observation, sanitation, and appropriate pest management tools to keep pest populations at a manageable level. The objective is not to eliminate every insect that ever appears, but to prevent pests from becoming established and causing damage to your plants. A successful IPM program recognizes that no single product can solve every pest problem, which is why multiple practices work together to create a healthier growing environment.
One of the most common questions I receive is why I recommend wiping plants with 70% isopropyl alcohol while also discussing systemic insecticides. The answer is simple: they serve completely different purposes. Seventy percent isopropyl alcohol is a contact treatment, meaning it only affects the pests it directly touches. It works quickly by disrupting the insect's protective outer cuticle and damaging its cell membranes, causing rapid dehydration and death. Once the alcohol evaporates, it no longer provides protection. That is why I recommend routine inspections and regular wipe-downs. Alcohol is most effective when pest populations are small because it removes insects before they have the opportunity to reproduce and spread throughout a collection.
Systemic insecticides work very differently. After application, the active ingredient is absorbed by the plant and moves through its vascular system. When susceptible insects feed on treated plant tissue, they ingest the active ingredient and are controlled. Unlike alcohol, systemics provide ongoing protection for a period of time, depending on the product and active ingredient being used. However, no systemic controls every pest, and selecting the correct product depends on identifying the pest you are trying to manage. For example, many commonly used systemic insecticides are ineffective against spider mites, which is why understanding both the pest and the product is essential.
If you choose to use systemic insecticides as part of your IPM program, it is important to rotate active ingredients with different modes of action, not simply alternate between different product names. Repeatedly exposing pest populations to the same mode of action places selection pressure on those populations. Over time, insects with a natural ability to survive that treatment are more likely to reproduce, gradually reducing the effectiveness of that mode of action. Rotating to a different mode of action helps reduce that pressure and preserve the effectiveness of the products available. It is also important to remember that two different brands may contain the same active ingredient or belong to the same mode of action group, so reading the label is just as important as choosing the product itself.
One of the biggest misconceptions I see online is the claim that pests will eventually become resistant to 70% isopropyl alcohol. Resistance develops when repeated exposure to a specific mode of action allows naturally tolerant individuals to survive and pass those traits to future generations. Alcohol works differently. It does not target a specific biological process inside the insect. Instead, it works through direct physical and chemical damage to the insect's protective outer cuticle and cell membranes. Because of this, resistance to isopropyl alcohol has not been demonstrated in houseplant pests in the same way resistance develops to insecticides with specific modes of action. If pests appear to return after treatment, the cause is almost always incomplete coverage, newly hatched insects, hidden pests that were never contacted, or new introductions into the collection. Alcohol can only kill the pests it touches, which is why thorough coverage and consistent follow-up inspections are essential.
It is also important to understand that IPM does not require every grower to follow the same pest management program. Some growers choose to build their long-term strategy around beneficial insects, while others prefer systemic insecticides. Both approaches can be effective when used correctly. The important part is understanding how each tool works and using it appropriately. Because many systemic insecticides can negatively affect beneficial insects, these two strategies are generally not used together. Choosing one long-term approach allows each program to work as intended.

Healthy roots, proper light, appropriate watering, quarantining new plants, and routine inspections create the foundation of every successful IPM program. Alcohol provides an effective contact treatment during regular inspections, while systemic insecticides can provide longer-term protection when used responsibly and rotated by mode of action. The most effective pest management program is not built around finding one product that solves every problem. It is built on understanding how each tool works, using it correctly, and preventing small pest problems from becoming major infestations.
