Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, commonly called the Moon Cactus, is a small, colorful cactus native to South America, especially regions of Paraguay and Argentina. What makes this plant unique is its neon-colored top—usually red, yellow, pink, or orange—which is actually a mutant that lacks chlorophyll. Because it can’t photosynthesize, it’s grafted onto a green cactus base (usually Hylocereus) that provides the energy it needs to survive. This pairing creates the striking, two-part look Moon Cacti are famous for.

In terms of light, Gymnocalycium mihanovichii prefers bright, indirect light. A south- or east-facing window with filtered sunlight is ideal. Too much direct sun—especially through hot afternoon windows—can scorch the colorful top, while too little light can cause poor growth or fading. The plant thrives in well-draining cactus soil and should only be watered when the soil is fully dry. During winter, it needs very little water due to dormancy. Overwatering and poor drainage are the most common reasons it fails.

Moon Cactus is prized for its bold colors and compact size, making it a favorite for desks, shelves, and small spaces. While it typically lives for a few years, the grafted top may eventually outgrow or weaken the base, at which point it can be regrafted to a new rootstock. Though short-lived compared to other cacti, it’s an easy-care option that brings vibrant energy to any collection, especially for beginners looking for something unique and low-maintenance.
