Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Begonia bowerae, commonly called Eyelash Begonia, is a rhizomatous begonia grown for its heavily textured, puckered leaves edged with fine hairs and marked with deep contrasting tones. Native to Mexico, it grows from a creeping rhizome that sits at the soil surface, sending up clusters of foliage on fuzzy red to pink stems. What makes Begonia bowerae stand out is the combination of bold texture, dark central patterning, and that low, spreading growth habit that creates a full, layered look without getting tall.

Place Begonia bowerae in an east window or a few feet back from a south or west window where it receives steady, even light without harsh direct exposure. A north window can work if it is close to the glass, but growth will slow and spacing may increase. Under grow lights, use 5000K to 6500K and position the light about 10 to 14 inches above the top of the plant. It performs best around 150 to 400 foot-candles. Too much direct light will wash out color and damage leaves, while too little light will cause stretching and loss of that tight, textured form.

Keep the soil lightly moist for Begonia bowerae but never saturated, and always leave the rhizome exposed at the surface. Do not bury it. Use a well-draining mix and check moisture deeper in the pot with a chopstick before watering. If leaves begin to curl, crisp, or feel thin, it is usually a sign of low humidity or the plant drying too much. If the rhizome softens or the base declines, the soil is staying too wet. Stable conditions, moderate humidity, and airflow will keep Begonia bowerae compact and healthy.
