Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

The Little Ruby plant, Alternanthera dentata 'Little Ruby', is a compact, low-growing tropical foliage plant native to South America, grown for its deep burgundy to ruby-purple leaves and dense, bushy form. Unlike larger Alternanthera varieties, this stays tight and structured, making it ideal for containers or borders. The leaves are small, matte, and richly colored, giving a bold contrast against green plants. Color intensity is the value here and is directly tied to how much light it receives.

Light requirements start with direction. Place it in a south or west-facing window where it can receive strong, direct to bright light daily. This plant needs higher light to maintain that deep ruby tone. It can survive in an east window, but color will fade toward green. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K positioned 8–12 inches from the canopy. Treat this as a high-light plant for best color and compact growth.

Watering and environment should stay balanced. Let the soil dry about halfway down, then water thoroughly and allow it to drain. Always check the root zone with a chopstick or meter before watering. Do not let it sit wet, but do not let it fully dry out for extended periods. Leaves softening or drooping mean it needs water, leggy stretched growth signals not enough light, and fading color also points to low light. Keep it warm, trim regularly to maintain shape, and provide moderate humidity.
