California plant shipping is coming back

We know our California customers have been waiting, and we’re working on bringing live plant shipping back to California.

California has additional agricultural requirements for live plants entering the state. Because Rooted ships from Michigan, we’re updating the way California plant orders will be prepared so we can meet those requirements while still getting plants safely to you.

What will be different?

When California plant shipping returns, live plants will be shipped bare root rather than in their nursery pots and growing medium.

Before shipping, the pot and growing medium will be removed and the roots will be cleaned and carefully prepared for the trip. California-bound plant packages will also be labeled according to the state’s agricultural shipping requirements.

We’re working through the details now so that when we reopen California plant shipping, we have a consistent process in place from the moment your plant is packed until it arrives at your door.

What will you need to do when your plant arrives?

Because your plant will arrive bare root, you’ll want to have a pot and your preferred growing medium ready.

We’ll also provide California-specific arrival and potting instructions so you know exactly what to do when you open your Rooted box. You won't be left trying to figure out how to handle a bare-root plant on your own.

Why bare root?

California has strict agricultural protections intended to reduce the movement of invasive pests into the state. Michigan is included in California’s Japanese beetle quarantine, and growing media around plant roots can provide a pathway for immature stages of the pest to travel unnoticed.

Shipping qualifying plants bare root and free from soil allows us to work within California's agricultural requirements while reopening access to live plants for our California customers.

California, you can still shop Rooted

While we work on bringing live plant shipping back, California customers can still shop our non-plant products.

Our plant care books and guides, Rooted merchandise, gifts and other eligible non-plant products aren't part of the live-plant shipping restriction.

So if you've been staying away from the Rooted website because you thought California couldn't shop with us at all, you don't have to wait for plant shipping to return.
