Macodes petola is a terrestrial jewel orchid native to Southeast Asia including Malaysia Borneo and surrounding regions where it grows along the forest floor in warm humid environments. Unlike most orchids grown for flowers this species is prized for its foliage. The leaves are velvety deep green to almost black with bright metallic lightning-like veins that glow under light. In nature it grows in loose organic matter with constant humidity and gentle airflow not in bark like epiphytic orchids.

Watering should follow a controlled moisture approach not full dry downs. This plant does not want to become bone dry but it also cannot sit in stagnant water. Keep the substrate lightly and evenly moist allowing just the top layer to dry slightly before watering again. A shallow pot with airy moisture-retentive mix such as fine bark sphagnum and perlite works well. Bottom watering can be used but only briefly then allow full drainage. If leaves wrinkle or feel thin it is too dry. If stems soften at the base or leaves yellow from below it is staying too wet.

Direction of light should be bright indirect to medium indirect never direct sun. An east window set back a few feet or a north window works beautifully. South exposure must be filtered and positioned well back from the glass. Too much light will wash out the metallic veining and cause leaf burn while too little light results in leggy stretched growth and smaller leaves. Signals are subtle. Healthy leaves stay firm low and compact with intense veining. When happy the plant creeps outward slowly and may eventually flower but the true measure of success is rich dark foliage with glowing vein contrast.
