Caladiums are tropical foliage plants prized for their stunning, heart-shaped leaves that come in shades of white, pink, red, and green. Native to South and Central America, particularly Brazil, these plants are grown more for their show-stopping leaves than flowers. With bold patterns and vibrant colors, Caladiums bring a splash of brightness to shady spots both indoors and out. Though they’re technically tuberous perennials, many people grow them as annuals or rotate them seasonally indoors.

When grown in the home, Caladiums prefer bright, indirect light—they’ll scorch in direct sun, but too little light can dull their vivid coloring. Near a north or east-facing window is ideal. These plants love warmth and humidity, so keep them in a spot that stays above 65°F and offers at least 50–60% humidity. Caladiums also have a dormancy period (usually fall/winter), where they may lose most or all of their leaves. Don’t panic—this is natural. Just reduce watering and allow the tuber to rest until it begins sprouting again in spring.

For active growth, keep the soil light, well-draining, and consistently moist but never soggy. A mix with peat, perlite, and a bit of compost works well. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, and feed every 2–3 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Avoid cold drafts or dry air, and don’t repot during dormancy. With the right conditions and patience through their cycles, Caladiums will reward you with brilliant foliage year after year.
