The Spindle Palm (Hyophorbe verschaffeltii) is a graceful, slow-growing palm native to the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean, specifically Rodrigues Island near Mauritius. It’s known for its smooth, spindle-shaped trunk that swells in the middle—giving it its distinctive name—and its elegant crown of arching, feather-like fronds. This palm adds a sculptural, tropical touch to both landscapes and indoor collections, admired for its symmetry and soft gray-green coloration.

Spindle Palms thrive in warm, humid environments and prefer well-draining soil that stays lightly moist but never soggy. They’re relatively low-maintenance once established, benefiting from moderate watering and occasional feeding during the growing season with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Indoors, maintaining consistent warmth and avoiding cold drafts helps keep the palm healthy and vibrant year-round.

Direction of light: The Spindle Palm prefers bright, indirect light when grown indoors and full sun when grown outdoors. A south- or west-facing window is ideal for indoor plants, as it provides strong, consistent light without harsh midday rays directly hitting the leaves. Too little light can lead to slower growth and pale fronds, while steady, bright exposure will help maintain its classic tropical form and rich green color.
